Industrial Revolution Reflection - 717 Words

Salina Ortiz HIS 111 09/10/2017 Reflection Week 3 This week had a lot of great information to take in. From the Queen Victoria information in the reading and the videos to the readings of Chapter 4 and 5. In Chapter 4 Marks talks about the industrial revolution. He explains the reason of why the Industrial revolution outline occurred in Europe not in China or India. He explains it as The dynamics of specialization, increased market exchange, and improved transportation in the context of the biological old regime and the particularities of Chinas situation was pushing it toward an increasingly labor-intensive agriculture, rather than toward an industrial revolution (page107). However, he believes that the industrial revolution†¦show more content†¦After that, the British East Indian Company gained the right to collect the Indian textile from much as Bengal. this increased the company revenue. Also, this gave the company the power to have an army. using this army, they control throughout India by the 1830s.This lead India to de industrialized. He also talks about the usage of the gun from the British to colonize Hong Kong, and he talks how strong the British army got. The British forced China to make selling Opium legal. This industrialization level that the British reached mad other countries to compete with Britain such as; France, The United States, Germany, Russia and Japan. At the end of the chapter he talks about El Nino Famines, its when the drought started in Latin America, Asian and African. This lead to Famine and 50 million people have died. This result a major distraction of the economy of these countries which puts them back in initial biological old regime state. He gives an example of the Britain using the Indian land to planet wheat and export it while the Indian are starving. He talks about Japan and the new regime (Meiji) era that have created, that regime give Japan the power to reach Britain level. In conclusion Marks attempt to discredit the rise of the West to cultural superiority but instead to accidents, conjectures, and contingencies, does not give enough credit to Europes ability to maximize its potential despite an inferior geographical position. Imperialism Good or Evil - 1677 Words

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, and Heart of Darkness by Joesph Conrad both analyze the imperialism of Africa in the late 1890’s to mid-1900’s. Things Fall Apart focuses on the native’s perspective, painting a negative picture of the Europeans. Heart of Darkness is from the European’s point of view, and depicts the natives as â€Å"savages†. Chinua Achebe wrote Things Fall Apart as a reaction novel to Heart of Darkness, as he felt that Conrad gave an inaccurate account of the African culture. Both novels recognize the main characters personal evils as well as their adversary’s. Robert Louis Stevenson said, â€Å"In all of us, two natures are at war - the good and the evil. All our lives the fight goes on between them, and one of them must†¦show more content†¦Marlow is not a native, savage, or even a man driven by greed and yet he still contains evil inside him. The European imperialists are seen to be the heroic, â€Å"good gu ys† throughout the novel and Marlow’s moral ambiguity challenges that belief. Even though Marlow is seen to be a man not fooled by European prejudice, he still contains evil inside of him and that effects the depiction of the natives, of the Europeans, and of the overall darkness in human nature that everyone, no matter what race you are, contains. Kurtz is known for his success in Africa and the amount of ivory he has produced there, but Kurtz has become obsessed with it and has been overtaken by the darkness of Africa essentially becoming savage himself. When Kurtz first came to Africa, he wanted to civilize the natives and imperialize them using peace. He said, â€Å"It gave me the notion of an exotic Immensity ruled by an august Benevolence† (Conrad 46). In this quote Kurtz explains the key to success was to â€Å"come in like gods† and rule with benevolence. Kurtz had pure intentions, no violence or death just imperialism. Later on in the pamphlet however, Kurtz changes his view on how to deal with the natives. He wrote, â€Å"†¦Exterminate all the brutes,† (Conrad 46). This shows the reader the evil and darkness inside of Kurtz, and makes us question his morality. Aunt Patti walked into the room holding a miracle. Six-weeks in age, Sam did not understand the significant effect this would have on his life. â€Å"Can I hold him?† I could see the resemblance in Sam to his mother. Our aim is too see how the solubility of a solute changes when temperature has been changed Essay Example

Our aim is too see how the solubility of a solute changes when temperature has been changed Essay The equipment we will be using is a test-tube, a spatula, a bun, a water bath, a thermometer, a measuring cylinder, and obviously we will need the solute and water to carry out the experiment.PLANOur aim is to see how many spatulas of a solute it will take to put in water to make it a saturated solution. Our solute will be potassium chloride. The plan is to firstly get all the equipment listed above, once we have done this we can start our experiment. We first of all have to measure out 7.5ml of water in a measuring cylinder; the water then goes straight into a test-tube. Once this is done we have to change the temperature, either to 10oc, 20oc, 30oc, 40oc, or 50oc. When the water is the right temperature we can start to add the spatulas in.The method was to put one spatula of potassium chloride, which was about 0.37g, in the test-tube, with the water, and than put the bun on top and shake it for about ten or fifteen seconds, you will than stop and add another spatula of potassium chl oride in, this goes on until the solvent wont dissolve the solute anymore, this is a saturated solution. After you have made the saturated solution you record the amount of spatulas it took to make the water saturated, then you do the same but with a different temperature. The whole experiment will be done twice, a preliminary experiment and a secondary experiment. Our preliminary experiment will be very rough, no one will measure how much, of the substance they will be using, to put in the test-tube.Hardly anyone will keep the same temperature all the way through the test.So the preliminary experiment will not be a fair test at all and this is why we will probably have a lot of anomalous results.Than we will do the experiment a second time but this time we will be measuring the amount of water put in, the amount of potassium chloride put in, and also the temperature of the water will be measured every 15 seconds.FAIR TESTTo keep this experiment a fair test we will have to make sure t hat we put the same amount of potassium chloride in the water every time we add another. We will also have to make sure that we put the same amount of water in the test-tube every time we put fresh water in.When we change the temperature to get our next result we will have to keep the temperature the same after every shake. When we shake the solution to make it dissolve, it may make the test fairer if we time the amount of time we are aloud to shake the solution. To make the experiment more accurate or to make our results more accurate, we could do the test two or three times, so we can work out the average amount of spatulas it takes to make a saturated solution.I predict that if we do not follow these rules than we will get a lot of anomalous results.PREDICTIONMy prediction is that when the solvent is a higher temperature the water will dissolve more potassium chloride than it will if the water was at a lower temperature. I think this because when anything is heated up the particles inside it move much faster and so if you heat the water up the particles inside it will move around more rapidly. If you add the potassium chloride in when the water is at a high temperature, than the solute will brake down much more faster, and much more of it.I also think that there will be maybe a pattern in the results, I know this because there always is a pattern in the results.OBSERVATIONThe experiment did work towards the plan. The apparatus was set out properly, and the right measurements of the water were made, which was 7.5ml.SUBSTANCE10oC20oC30oC40oC50oCPotassium chloride6Spatulas5Spatulas7Spatulas8Spatulas9SpatulasAs you can see the results do not appear right on the table. This is because some mistakes were made. Mistakes were made mainly because this was the results of our preliminary experiment, which not very accurate at all. The results of our secondary experiment is below:TEMP (DEGREES CELSIUS)SPATULASPOTASSIUM CHLORIDE (g)1072.592072.5930134.8140103.750114.07You can see that the second table is more accurate but you can also still see that there are many anomalous results.CONCLUSIONAfter doing this experiment I can conclude that my explanation and prediction was correct. When you look at the results table you can see that my prediction was right. My prediction was that if you made the temperature of the solvent higher than the solvent could dissolve more spatulas of potassium chloride. This actually may not look clear on the results table because we did have quiet a few anomalous results. My explanation was that when you make a liquid higher in temperature the molecules move faster and so break down the solute much more quickly. You can see a pattern in both the preliminary results and secondary results. The pattern is if you add a temperature of 10oC, one more spatula of potassium chloride can be dissolved in the water. This supports my prediction about there being a pattern in the results.EVALUATIONThe procedure that was not perfect planned but the way we did it the experiment was also very wrong. We were supposed to measure out 7.5ml of water out, we did this alright but it could have been more accurate, by maybe using more accurate equipment. We were also supposed to measure out 0.37g of potassium chloride, sugar, salt, or copper sulphate, but no one measured if there solute was exactly 0.37g. in our group we just dumped in on spatula of potassium chloride in the water. So when we put the potassium chloride in the water, we were putting different amounts in.We all had to keep the temperature the same while we were going through the experiment but this was almost impossible to do, even though we did put the test-tube back into the water bath when the temperature decreased. All these mistakes lead to anomalous results. You can tell easily by looking at the table that we werent very accurate at recording the results.Even though there are many anomalous results you can see easily that the evidence is reliable. If you look a t the table and exchange the anomalous number with the correct one you can see a simple pattern in both the preliminary and secondary results. We could make some big improvements to the procedure to make the experiment more fair and accurate.I have already said that we could use more accurate equipment. We could also record more temperatures so we get a better understanding of how many spatulas, more can just 5oc add. Also if everyone in the class did the experiment on the same substance the results will be more reliable because you can work out an average between everyones results.

Globalization, Poverty and Labor Structures essays

Globalization, Poverty and Labor Structures essays Globalization, accumulation of capital and therefore economic restructuring are crucial elements in the way the world is organized and wealth is distributed. The development of capitalist world economy is heavily dependent on the particular division of labor that governs a nations market. The concept of International Division of Labor (IDL) reflects the vertical relationship that exists among First World countries or developed countries and Third World countries or the developing countries. One should note that while the terms First world, Third world, developed and developing countries are often used in a pejorative way. It is not the intention of this essay to contribute to the discursive reduction of the countries discussed, nor is it the intention to reinforce binaries that allow for a vertical relationship of power to exist among the privileged and the less fortunate. For the purpose of this essay, IDL will refer to the new system of the world economy where the continuous growth of the capitalist countries has been accorded the gravest importance. In this model, worked out by the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the organization of the Western industrial countries has been equated to the relocation and export of labor intensive and therefor labor-cost-intensive production processes to developing countries. This economic restructuring manifests into the use and abuse of Third World workers, because of their low wage levels and minimal requirements for safe work conditions, giving rise to establishment of Free Trade or Production Zones, or World Market Factories in countries such as the Philippines, Malaysia, Mexico, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The relocation of industries, particularly the textile and garment industries, the electronics industry and the toy industry has dictated a certain labor order where women are the op timal force for the capitalist accumulation process on world scale because the...

Using Archaeological evidence, explain how chaging practices in the Essay

Using Archaeological evidence, explain how chaging practices in the treatment of the dead illuminates our wider understanding of the Neolithic period - Essay Example The mortuary practices during the Neolithic period in Britain (4000-2500 BC), provides evidence for the underlying complex sociology. Not only do they signify the role of the dead, but also throw light on other aspects of this age. The following are some of them. The arrival of the Beaker Folk The most significant cultural shift in the Neolithic period is associated with the change in burial practice from communal to single tombs. This sudden change could only be explained by the arrival in Britain of new people, who are now referred as â€Å"Beaker Folk†. They brought from the Mediterranean a new religion and gradually incorporated it into the existing western European culture. Further evidence for this migration is provided by the remarkably different pots that are found in Neolithic monuments. This large-scale change in material culture, especially the pottery styles in chambered tombs can only be explained as a result of population movement. (Thomas, 2000) Towards the end of the Neolithic period the British societies were involved in agriculture. These agricultural communities expressed their ownership of land through chambered tombs and earthen barrows, which were used as territorial demarcations. These communities later evolved to form chief-doms. As they became more internally ranked and their chiefs became increasingly successful in redistributing the surplus of agricultural production, they would turn away from communal expressions of identity in monumental form and adopt styles of burial which emphasized their individual prestige. (Thomas, 2000) Another aspect of the society is the authority exercised by the elites. This they wielded through possession of copper and bronze objects, which were displayed in public as symbols of power and also buried as grave goods. (Cummings, 2002) These graves may contain artifacts, but rather than symbols of prestige sacrificed in order

Culture of Laughter Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Culture of Laughter - Essay Example Bean is that their writers have determined 'laughter' as a reaction that serves the function of a social sanction. In this context Bergson's research on laughter theory reveals that the function of comedy is to correct the 'follies' of mankind by making them appear ridiculous. In other words, such event in which any actor performs 'antisocially' generates an amusing situation. The power of laughter as a social sanction has thus been elucidated in many comedy movies as well as comics. On the other hand, we have seen that the theory of the 'corrective' function of laughter is inadequate to explain its arousal by verbal wit, which as we have seen is similar to any other type of ludicrous situation in many movies of Loriot. However, this is not the case with Mr. Bean, as Mr. Bean comedies revolve around gestures and expressions. Both the characters represent comedies in a social environment however, the difference exists in their way of representing; Loriot with less expressions and more humour whereas Mr. Bean with more physicality in the comedy. Vicco von Bulow, a German humour performer of comedy remembered as 'Loriot' is best known as a 'cartoonist' for the movies in which he used to perform. His famous work contains television series 'Loriot'. 'Odipussi' and 'Pappa ante portas' are his well known comedies in which he performed not only as a comedian but as a performer. (Loriot, 2007a) Though an all-rounder in artistic works (writer, director and poet), Loriot highlights humour in most of his comedy films and dramas by presenting a series of 'laughing' events, but still one wonders how the sheer relief of such events, whether in the participator who escapes in person or in the observer who watches a peril that passes him touch others, marks a distinct species of laughter. (Gregory, 1924, p. 22) Among all societies one finds a more or less organised system of social sanctions related to the prevailing code of right and wrong. Such sanctions may be positive, that is, designed to encourage socially desirable behaviour or they may be negative, that is, they may serve to discourage anti-social behaviour. Loriot's comedies inhibit all the characteristics of such positive and negative loopholes of the society in such a critical manner that one does not have any option other than to laugh. His comedies are non physical in nature as compared with those of Mr. Bean's and present before us the flaws of modern society in combination with humour and laugher that one does not feel awkward. Though such sanction exist in all societies, and any theory which is to explain their meaning must take account of their various manifestations in totally different types of social structure, but the way Loriot presents our society's dilemmas is much more than what viewer expects. (Piddington, 1963, p. 117) In other words we can say that Loriot presents society in a critical manner. Loriot's Humour If we analyse Loriot's work in the light of Bergson's laughter theory, most of his films represent laughter triggering in a social surrounding. Following the notion that laughter only triggers among humans, his films highlight all the antisocial happenings but in a social environment. This is evident from one of his dramas 'once upon a noodle', in which Loriot confronts a situation where all the restaurant members

Halting the wheels of hope Essay Example for Free

Halting the wheels of hope Essay The concept of governmental tyranny is often difficult to grasp to those living in more democratic nations, and media output and literature become key in growing to understand it’s implications. Serving to heighten this political perspective is â€Å"The Wheels of Freedom: Bicycles in China† by Fred Strebeigh, which describes China’s bicycle ban in 1989 and subsequent protests in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. The bicycle provided significant growth and freedom within Chinese culture, and Strebeigh endeavors to communicate this to readers. Illustrating this, he defends the will of the people to preserve their right to ride them in the face of government opposition, and the tragedy imposed by political oppression. Upon the bicycle’s introduction to the people of China in the early 20th century, many looked to it through eyes of bewilderment. A fascinating and not yet popularized machine, it was most commonly ridden by members of affluent societies. As it’s newness wore off, however, it slowly became available those of the more humble classes, and in place of the word â€Å"bicycle†, the term â€Å"foreign horse† found it’s use in the minds and mouths of the masses. Strebeigh includes that the term â€Å"foreign† communicated the people’s feelings of admiration for the bicycle while alluding to the fact that it was modern. The peasantry of China found themselves with the deepest sense of admiration for the â€Å"foreign horse†. To them, the thought of owning one brought to mind the ease it could bring to their everyday lives, as they often carried burdensome loads on their backs. Yet, the low supply and thus high cost of the bicycle made it’s acquisition impractical for them. In response to the desire, the government later began regulating higher production rates of the bicycle to readily supply them to the impoverished and raise morale. However, the term â€Å"foreign horse† was banned in light of it’s glorification of another nation’s ingenuity, highlighting the extremes of the Chinese government to exercise their sovereign of the people. In it’s place, the name â€Å"self-running cart†. This served to express the government sentiment that the people could have what they wanted, but only at it’somplete jurisdiction. The people tolerated the name change of their beloved bicycles, as the trade-off of name for it’s widespread distribution was easy enough, and many still used it’s original moniker in private. Following it’s popularization, the lives of many saw an enrichment in quality. The dignity of the people improved, as it granted them new freedoms and eased the stress of everyday tasks, al lowing for flourishing business and connectedness within communities. Perhaps stated best, Strebeigh wrote of it’s wide use, â€Å"Everywhere, cycles kept life rolling† (Strebeigh). In addition to heightening the commerce of societies, it introduced the occupation of bicycle repair, which Stebeigh revered as perhaps the â€Å"freest† job in China. In it’s praise, he wrote, â€Å"A hard worker needed only a street corner and a few tools. Before his eyes bikes would inevitably break down and, if he was skilled, clients would multiply. Bicycle repair seemed to offer an extension of what the bike itself offered and what so many Chinese sought: modest dignity, new choices, ample freedom. † (Strebeigh). Bike repair was a choice outside of the typical, and entirely pursued as an individual pleased. Sadly, it was the bicycles issuance of dignity, choices, and freedom that that ultimately inflicted threat upon the Chinese government. They understood that with bike ownership, the people were growing to a height of advantage. It was their supposition that, if the people continued in such a fashion, government control perhaps had the potential to become menial. To ensure that their ultimate authority was not being overlooked, a ban was placed on bicycles within China. News of this did not come amicably to the people, and their response was protest. It was Tianenmen Square in Bejing which saw the organization of a large-scale demonstration which rallied for government reform. It lasted weeks, and ended upon the mobilization of troops to the area. Their invasion was destructive and resulted in the loss of many lives as troops initiated the use of tanks and weaponry to control the people. In media coverage, it was not the bloodied bodies of victims that were aired on television screens in Chinese homes, but rather the depiction of bicycles which had been crushed by the military. Of it, Strebeigh writes, â€Å"They wanted to show crushed dignity, crushed humanity, crushed freedomso much that the bicycle means in China. † (Strebeigh). This image was a wise devise of the government. They knew what the bicycle represented to the people, and knew that to show it destroyed would communicate their dominance and triumph. The concept of tyrannical rule and its implied bleakness are often incomprehensible, or altogether unrecognized by the people of more democratic countries given their many freedoms. With the words of Fred Strebeigh, however, perspective expands. The honor of an object as seemingly simple as a bicycle becomes worthy of defense, even dying for, and the tragedy of oppressive rule becomes very real. Works Cited

My Ideal Partner Essay

There are many things I look for in a relationship and in a partner, loyalty and respect being at the top. A relationship is based completely on loyalty and the trust that you must have in your partner. I would never want my partner to make me feel like I was a second choice or not good enough for them, just as much as I would not want my partner to feel that way. Loyalty is about support and allegiance, my partner needs to support my decisions and my goals one-hundred percent. Respect is to admire your partner’’s abilities and achievements and to never put them down. A relationship is two sided and must stay balanced for it to be healthy and functioning. I plan on working at a job I love and being very successful when I grow up, I hope the same for my husband. If my husband were more successful than me it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest and if it were the opposite I would not want a partner that felt threatened or second best. I could not be with someone that didn’t aspire to achieve great things in life. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is also very important that is why I want a partner that motivates me to stay fit and to eat healthy. I do not want a husband that is lazy and content with whatever is given to him. We will strive together to be active and be able to live a long and happy life. Being fit is important to me because I love to travel and to explore and go on adventures, I need a partner that also enjoys these things. Wanting to travel to many different countries and explore new things is something my ideal partner would definitely need to be interested in. I want kids and my partner must too. Couples often get into serious relationships without knowing what the other person might want in the future. My ideal partner would want to live the same life that I do. That is why it is important that I marry someone that is interested in having at least two kids, I want to be able to start a family of my own. Finally my partner must be attractive. Although physical attraction is not what to base a relationship on it, it can’t hurt. Having an attractive partner can only be beneficial, it can boost confidence and make you more compelled to enjoy the time you spend together. I would like to marry someone that I enjoy looking at everyday. I want my husband to be  tall and to be muscular, who could argue that? Ha. In conclusion my ideal partner would be a combination of many different qualities. It is someone that I can trust and feel I can confide anything to. It is someone that respects me, and my aspirations. It is someone that wants to travel the world and see new things. It is someone that wants kids and to have a family. It is someone that is physically attractive and fit. My ideal partner will treat me as his equal.

Personal Development Plan Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 1

Personal Development Plan - Essay Example It has to comprise job assignments that build leadership skills. And it has to be hold up by the organization and incorporated into a development philosophy that views planning documents as the commencement of the development expedition, not the end (Ametrano, I. M., 2003, 190-193). During the research of this network based assignment I have equally focus upon my personal development and look for to become accustomed the worldwide assessment of performance more especially to the personal development in networking. It is based mainly on WAN based networking for Nokia Incorporation The primary four part scores seek to gauge Personal grooming as a professional figure when I was capturing data, the aptitude to create a living in a dynamic-based company like Nokia. To design and implement a network model for an international organisation to get connections between two branches. To also examine the network model to make sure it met the performance and compatibility requirements. No doubt, the objective of this network based project is a development plan for multier national company is an important part of any effectual leadership-development system at two levels. At the organizational level, these plans make sure that the next age group of leaders will have the skills and skills required to define and implement the corporation's strategies. According to this research work at the personal level, it forces me as future leader to focus on what needs to be done in order to grow. When done right, the individual development plan becomes a contract future leaders make with themselves and the organization about the things they want to do or to become. The plan creates discipline and a good plan creates motivation. If we analyzed then we come to know about basic object of this research based project: 1. Critical evaluation on the chosen network modelling and simulation software(OPNET guru) 5. To illustrate the issues to produce a better performance of a WAN 6. Using network modelling and simulation software(OPNET guru) to create a simulation for the designed network model 7. Implement a prototype to demonstrate the simulation of the network. 8. Business Week 2 - Essay Example There is no use for a research problem that cannot be done. Precision in words used is at the core of a good research statement, with the problem being expressed in the initial few words. Editing of writing includes careful choice of words, clarity of expression, expression of thoughts in full with minimal word use, use of a thesaurus, maintaining short sentences, and rewriting as often as required with alertness for modification. An example of this is that in going through articles on the subject the literary references provide additional sources that may not have been considered. Among the difficult areas of a research are the methodological and design issues. A third benefit of a thorough review of existing literature is that the manner in which similar studies handled these issues could be the means to resolving methodical and design issues. 3. Sometimes students believe that taking the time to prepare a complete and carefully designed research proposal is something to be preached, but not really practiced. Identify at least two different problems related to research design that are commonly encountered when doing research. For each problem, explain how a complete and detailed research proposal would help the researcher avoid the problem? Employing improper data collection tools and the lack of application to ethical issues are two commonly occurring problems related to research design. There are several data collection tools like questionnaires, interviews, and the like,
